Since internet traffic carries an overwhelming figure of “approximately 2.5 exabytes of data every day,” an exabyte is equivalent to one billion gigabytes, the demand for effective, scalable and flexible storage solutions isn’t just surprising but also enterprising. And this is where software-defined storage (SDS) comes in as it offers flexibility and cost-effective solutions compared to traditional storage approaches that are hardware-based. Two SDS models had arisen, namely: hyperconverged and hyperscale.
In hyperconverged approach, “all components are converged at the software level and cannot be separated out” wherein “storage controller and array are deployed on the same server, and compute and storage scale together.” Hyperconverged storage infrastructure is “centrally managed and virtual-machine based.”
On the other hand, hyperscale approach to storage makes use of “distributed computing environment in which the storage controller and array are separate” which makes scalability favorable especially when there is an increasing demand of storage; think of big data and cloud storage.
However, each approach has its own challenges. So what’s the future of storage?
Storage is now more flexible than ever, giving the architect freedom to do what best meets storage needs in a fluid manner. These hyper solutions can be combined rather than being an either-or situation. This capability helps enterprises feel confident that they will be able to future-proof their storage capacity and cost-effectively manage the high volumes of data that comes their way.
